Today, Friday 17th June 2005, The Fire Brigades Union Executive Council have released a statement which effectively BANS the use or viewing of the UK FIRE website by FBU members.
UK FIRE
note with immense disappointment and complete shock, the resolution that the EC has brought forward regarding the UK-Fire web site. We have given our considered response to their form of words on the website and HERE.
Site Members should read the security advice below & the internal Admin thread on security and consider their own positions prior to logging on. Please follow the links below to login, register or leave.

The FBU EC STATEMENT
'This committee condemns the predominately anonymous and venomous personal attacks on FBU members and officials posted on the UK–FIRE web site. The vicious attacks fail to treat members with dignity and respect and are contrary to the rules and policies of the FBU.

This committee notes the concerns reflected at conference 2005 of potential and actual infiltration and use of the site by the BNP and non FBU members.

Many of the postings are of a sexist, racist or homophobic nature and are contrary to the aims of the unions “All Different All Equal” policies.

This committee calls on the Executive Council to :

Rule that membership; administration and posting on the UK – FIRE web site are contrary and prejudicial to the interest of the union.

Instruct that no member or official should participate in the aims, objectives or administration of the site by posting on the site, operating or helping to operate it or having any dealings with the site except dealings specifically to ask for the removal of material on the site.

Rule that the site acts outwith the democratic structure and democratic processes of the union.

Seek further legal advice to identify and take legal/IUD action against the site, its operators, contributors and against members who offend or breach FBU rules and policies.

That a standing EC subcommittee be established with a remit to ensure that members and officials who are the subject of postings on this or other websites which undermine the aims and policies of FBU are afforded the full protection of the FBU. The remit of the committee will include identifying and initiating the appropriate action against any member or official who fail to uphold the aims and policies of the FBU on this site or any other website.

UK Fire Security Advice
(Please read carefully before proceeding)

UK Fire offer this advice for users or potential users of the UK Fire Website

Firstly the DON'TS:

1. DO NOT use your own name as a username or place any contact details eg. tel no etc in your profile.
2. DO NOT use your own webspace to host your avatar, images etc as this can be traced back to yourself. Instead use a link that is already on the web.
3. DO NOT be cohersed into giving your real identity away to anybody, unless you are sure you can trust this person 100%
4. DO NOT use a work computer. all brigades use proxy servers which monitor the flow of traffic entering and leaving the workplace.

Now the DO'S:

1. DO use a web based email account to register eg hotmail, yahoo etc
2. DO treat your real name as you would your Bank PIN. The UK Fire staff will not ask for your real name and do not need to know this. Nobody does. Revealing your realname is your prerogative. UK FIRE will NOT reveal any individual information to anybody.
3. DO consider the use of a proxy server. This can be set up in your web browser and can effectively mask your true IP.
4. DO contact the UK Fire staff if you think anybody is trying to discover your real identity.
5. DO contact the UK Fire staff if you think your ID has been compromised. We can then change your ID

There is a facility in your control panel/profile to BROWSE INVISIBLY. This will allow members to log on, browse and post invisibly to other members. Only the staff can see you.

If members adhere to these simple rules, nobody.... I repeat... NOBODY can discover your identity!

Safe browsing.....
