A timely reminder as tensions are starting to run a little higher,
in relation to posts on twitter & facebook.
Although they are very good mediums to get the word out, your identity is much more easily discovered on them.
Stick with the security points below and you are 100% safe on this site.
Although as advised in point 7 below, think before you post.
How to stay secure & anonymous
1. DO consider the use of a web based email account to register e.g. hotmail, yahoo etc. As an additional security measure, we prevent other users from viewing your email address as default.
2. DO treat your real name as you would your Bank PIN. The UK Fire staff will not ask for your real name and do not need to know this. Revealing your true identity is your prerogative. UK FIRE will NOT reveal any individual information to anybody.
3. DO consider the use of a proxy server. This can be set up in your web browser and can effectively mask your true IP.
4. DO contact the UK Fire staff if you think anybody is trying to discover your real identity.
5. DO contact the UK Fire staff if you think your ID has been compromised. We can then change your ID
6. DO consider browsing invisibly. This will allow members to log on, browse and post invisibly to other members. Only the staff can see you.
7. DO think before you post! Try to not give any tips about your identity within posts. Over time, a portfolio could be created if you give careless and unnecessary clues about yourself.
Things to avoid doing.
1. DO NOT use your own name as a username or place any contact details eg. tel no etc in your profile.
2. DO NOT use your own webspace (if you have any) to host your avatar, images etc as this can be traced back to yourself. Instead use a link or an image hosting service eg imageshack etc that is already on the web.
3. DO NOT be cohersed into giving your real identity away to anybody, unless you are sure you can trust this person 100%
4. DO NOT use a work computer. All companies use proxy servers or gateways which monitor & log the flow of traffic entering and leaving the workplace.
5. DO NOT give unnecessary clues about your identity e.g.. I worked at MacDonald's in 1982 or my sisters name is..... This is the most common mistake that users make.
Should things go wrong.....
If things go wrong.......
1. DO contact a UK Fire Admin in the first instance. We can offer advice and assistance in dealing with all matters related to membership and posting on UK Fire.
2. DO NOT leave it to the last minute to contact UK Fire. This is the single most detrimental course of action you can take. The sooner we are notified of any problems, the sooner we can attempt to resolve the issue.
