Pension query
#1
A freind i know joined in Feb 96, had 18 month career break, tapered protection runs out December 2021, they are 55 in June 2022.
They want to leave as soon as possible, when is the best time to go,December 2021 June 2022 or later?
Thanks in advance for your help.

55 gives them the right to commute a quarter of their pension pot as a lump sum. Most FFs care about that. The 6 months or so of 2015 scheme can also be taken from 55. June 2022.

I assume the career break happened before they joined the 2015 scheme?

I doubt he has the choice to go before he is 55 to get his pension, you need to have at least 25 years service and with the 18 months break I am guessing he just about makes 25 years service about same time he is 55.
