FBU officials in middle management ?
#11
Tam was a good mate of mine and would be spitting at the thought of being on this site and being discussed at the same time as the case in question, he had no time for Brother McQuade. Tam was a Station officer before he became the Brigade Sec, and Regional Sec, whilst holding those posts he never went for promotion. This issue here is that both Brother McQuade and McGlone have been applying for posts with Bro McQuade at this time a temp Station manager in the north for 16 weeks. It is really strange when you read the election statements and how they were going to do this and that and not put up with x and y unlike the last lot, what a joke. I do hope that brother McGlone wakes up and withdraws his name or resign the post.

Conspiracy theories doing the rounds again, slagging off then making up stories about firefighters who became union officials now hold or seeking management jobs. Stories have been made up by some with personal agendas to slate very good officials in the past and I see it continues to this day. Who actually cares, we have had previous union officials who held officer posts, Davi Paton, Roddy Robertson, John McGhee, Billy Coats, John Cairns etc etc etc. Being a union official should have no bearing on your career as a firefighter. Union officials on the take just to get promotion does that then apply to all the previous officials or is it just the present ones. It is a right the union fought and won years ago and should remain so. Keep the conspiracy theories going though it gives me a good laugh.

Angry,

You missed jock munro, lff, how could you .
The present chair was told during a recent meeting on health and safety issues that he needed to calm down as it wasn't a promotion interview by the deputy cfo. He has taken a post that was part of a collective grievance that he negotiated. If its all above board and sweet then why have you not been told on the Web site, newsletter etc.

RDR sorry if you feel I offended Tam,
Never my intention.
I thought maybe wrongly that my post was of a jocular nature not to be taken seriously.
My story is true, it did happen.
Tam was a great help to me at cowcaddens, even coming in to meet me on one occasion whilst he was on holiday to help me sort out a problem I had with a senior officer.

I made the mistake of going for a beer or two after, spent two days with a hangover whilst he appeared to be none the worse for our excesses.
We all have opinions, thank god they are not all the same, or there would be no debate.

No offence, I was also being jocular, and truthful. The point I was making was that tam never applied for promotion after taking on senior roles in the fbu, before or after is a different thing altogether. As you say, tam was an ace, but he could be an arse with a drink, some of our best strategy came after a few, lol

Many thanks RDR for clearing that up.
My first weekend school was preceded by a 8 hour drinking session with tam and others in the golden lion hotel in Stirling. I finished up so drunk my mate had to carry me up the stairs to my room. I was sick all night, and had a hangover like hell next morning.

I had to get up for a lecture on the history of the trade union movement, given by none other than tam teirney and Dave Paton.Well I sat through the lecture struggling, whilst tam appeared none the worse. Reciting from papers he had prepared for the lecture.
I asked him later that night, " how can you drink like that and be alright next morning"
His reply "practice makes perfect, to be a good trade unionist you have to able to handle your beer" followed by its your turn mines is a.........

Aye the weekend schools, never at a weekend of course. Was that the one that Bruce from Lothian and Borders was asked to leave the hotel bar as he was wearing a string vest! He was years before rab c but just too late for punks,

Another man I had lots of time for who unfortunately is no longer with us, was BIG RAB chalmers all 6'8" of him.

Tam Teirney was forever slagging him of which I did not like.

At one of the weekend schools big Tam was trying to talk us into holidaying in the then east Germany, well we were in stitches then Tam Tierney told us to take this serious, or him and Dave Paton would have to listen to him whining about it all weekend. Dave Paton started laughing so much he had to vacate the room, and the then gen sec of the stuc Campbell Christie chirped in " I've been there don't go".
Big Tam wandered away tail between his legs. The laughter just got a lot louder.
RIP BIG MAN.

I don't see a problem with it really as a trade unionist is a trade unionist regardless of rank( back to the old days) but we did have a guy once who re-negotiated the officers rota only to be promoted a few weeks or months later. The guy concerned was a really clever bloke so it could have been just a coincidence but it was a bit strange when he went into fire safety, where the senior negotiating officer was the head of the dept, and the guy who was promoted had never worked in that dept.
