Nobody has tried to screw me, not even a knock on the dormitory door late at night, maybe its my choice of aftershave..

"I would like to think I was respectful to all, never give sexuality, creed or colour any thought, thought they were all trying to screw the watch officers.I did as a fireman so it was to be excepted."
There's the rub, the auld fashioned watch officers knew what was going on, below and above, because they had experience, and knew who was trying to screw them, and weren't afraid to speak up and get the screw removed before more damage was done.

I was a watch officer for close to 20 years, I think consistency was the most important attribute, that way everyone knew were they stood.
I had a Boss once, what a bastard, he was from Cumbria, always on your back, to make matter worse he was a man U supporter, tells you ever thing. Real slave driver.
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing tackle

Cam he wasn't a Man U supporter he was a follower of Man U
I see kids wearing shirts with Messi on the back, sad indictment
They should have been wearing the name of their local team, irrespective of how successful they are/were
Obviously your old SO didn't understand the term TEAM
I support my local team, I attend all be it occasionally
I follow a couple of teams that I like
West Ham being one of them, although I don't like the present management
Kids nowadays aren't given the same social identification that I was
What has this to do with retirement
The old watch ethos has been eroded
The camaraderie, the feeling of belonging
Has been to a degree despatched to history
The past 20 years have destroyed the previous 20 years

Not sure it's been destroyed totally, yebut. Maybe been eroded in many places. But the watch ethos still hangs on in some places.
Damagement had been trying for a while to break up the watches before I retired 9 years ago. After the last national strike the death knell on watches sticking together seemed to be on the cards .
Rolling on a few years and my youngster is in the job. In my day we stuck together, drank together at nights out, helped each other out on day's off doing homers etc.
Nowaday's my daughters night oot with the watch normally involves flying off to Ibiza, or heading down to Blackpool for the 4 day's between shifts, and the watch gaffers go too. Don't see her several times a year between shifts .
Had to go sick this year due to an injury, and the phone was always on the go from the watch including gaffers offering advice. Just bought a house and has a queue of ex trades in the job lined up to do homers at "mates rates".
Agreed, won't be the same everywhere, but the watches still stick together in some places.

Changed days peg, in our time a night out was down the local, in the city centre, or even in the station. Now they are off to Ibiza.
We all have opinions, thank god they are not all the same, or there would be no debate.

Aye, with a bit of planning, cheap flights, a couple of cheap hotel rooms for the whole watch to get their heads down in, cheap drink and food makes it worthwhile these days .
And so be it .
