There is no problem noisy, if there was it would reflect poorly on the trade union movement. Senior officers are public sector workers, subject to the same regulations, and conditions that firefighters are.
But it's important that their position is respected, and that they can refer to a section within the movement tailored for their needs.
We all have opinions, thank god they are not all the same, or there would be no debate.

Being a senior officer and a FBU Member, is fraught with difficulties, the first thing you have to except is no one likes you, The real problem is that the FBU have allowed members to be discriminated against for promotion.
I have had a CFO in the FBU and DCFO and ACOs, in fact the officer section was the most out spoken, union meetings were not for the faint hearted.
Times change not always for the better.
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing tackle

I like you Camus, I liked most of my senior officers disliked others.
But the ones like you who remained FBU members and came out with us, we'll to me those guys were right up there.
Thinking that everyone dislikes you can lead to problems, both for the officer, and the men and women who serve under them.

Probably dislike is the wrong word may be dis trust would be better.
After the 2003 strike there was diffidently a different atmosphere on stations even to FBU officers, even though the senior officer on strike had lost more money then any one else.
This attitude was what contributed to many leaving the FBU, which made resilience very easy.

Never assume that senior officers always align themselves with principle officers strategies.
Often at meeting its the ADOs and DOs who would be the first to challenge new procedures.
This resulted in the procedures being altered and watered down to some extent
The ADOs and DOs knew the what when and how of what could be achieved on station and often their advice would be taken on board.
However , even after challenging the CFO,and maybe getting things amended , the officer then had to bring it back to station and implement it, often in the face of resistance.
The better officers managed to balance the situation
Other officers either sided totally with the CFO or run with the watches.
Don't underestimate the influence some senior officers had in protecting cos , outside of the official Union mechanisms.
Implementing policies with a wise touch

Its pleasing to see a thread which isn't slating the 'gaffers'..as many of the threads can end up doing on here. ( or probably more accurately, some individual posts) . I think the issues with some of the previous region 1 team and possible across the FBU is that most folk forget that all these punters are just fireys the same as everyone else and , for the most part, paying FBU members. We all joined together , went our separate ways in terms of geography and 'career' and end up where we end up. The notion that all gaffers are rubbish fireys and all fireys are brilliant is unfortunately rolled out far too often ( and not by all of you good souls before you go mental). Yes there are people promoted beyond their capability but guess what? That isn't anything new as it was exactly the same 25 years ago in the canteen discussions...we've all heard , and continue to hear the conversations. What's important is that we don't right folk off because they are gaffers and assume they have only self interest at heart....generalisations never tend to be very helpful....and that works both ways as we have some hugely talented and conscientious fireys at stations
Back on thread, the temp promotion of one of those individuals to SM, I'm afraid does nothing for his credibility and looks, from the outside anyway, that someone has feathered their nest and manipulated criteria to get a temp job, which is a shame and he will account for that at some point I'm sure.
