So here we are in 2019, any new thoughts on whether OOT membership is worthwhile for reasons other than remaining as an FBU member (of sorts)?

Did they not help a retired member or two with their pension entitlement?

£2 per month for legal that 's £24 per year.
Car insurance legal £35
House insurance legal £35
If I got knocked off my push bike FBU legal would cover me, car and house won't!
Car legal won't cover your house, house legal won't cover your car FBU legal does it all £46 saving!!

Now think about pensions. Retire after 30 years service fit an healthy, 8 years later that back injury you got on the job at 15 years service come back an bites you in the arse. You now can't do your part time retirement job. A phone call to the FBU and all of a sudden they are helping you get your pension reviewed and you then get a due to service increment on your monthly pension

£2 per month thats all

This sort of information was given at the pre retirement course. My son works in insurance confirms the info above on legal.

Good posts Trajet and Stressed.

Not only did the FBU help with WT pensions with many of our retired members receiving big payments following retirement but they also helped out our RDS members a few years back. Once again, they also received big payouts in relation to their contributions.

The FBU are continuing to fight pension battles for serving members who we know are being shafted by this government.
The FBU is the only public sector union to fight so hard for justice with regards to pensions. This comes at a financial cost, and if just a few pence from each OT members subs goes towards fighting the battle then that has to be a good thing.

Many people may have retired from the job angry and frustrated at the way they have been treated in their final years, quite rightly so, but it's rare that that sentiment was created by your immediate friends and colleagues on the frontline. Therefore, I would like to thank all OT members in helping fight for the friends/colleagues they have left behind with their monthly contribution.

As Stressed has stressed, there are many other benefits to being an OT member too.

Hope you are well

Take care

Excuse my ignorance, but I thought FBU legal for OOT members, only covers someone for something that may have happened, during your service and may have repercussions later in life.

The FBU values our Retired and Out of Trade (ROOT) members and is constantly looking for ways we can improve the range of services available to you. The union is proud to now promote a new, comprehensive package of benefits and services for ROOT members, including:
The FBU has made it clear, we will not sit back and accept attacks on our members or the service. The union is committed to campaigning on behalf of every member, doing whatever is necessary to win the best possible outcome for them. Whether the campaign be on public/firefighter safety, pay, job cuts or more specific legal cases such as the fairer commutation campaign we will always campaign to the very end.

ROOT membership brings a wide range of benefits that could save you money, for the small contribution of just £2 per month by direct debit – that is less than 6p per day!

I contacted Thompsons over a problem I was having with my new employer, only to be told that assistance was only available for something that was due to my fire service employment, oh well, it doesn't matter now, !

£2/month for OOT members is a peppercorn rent. It doesn't matter what it was before, it is a trivial amount. I'll remain an OOT member for the rest of my life. I'd like a 40 year membership pin.
