Books of condolence and fund set up in memory of Firefighter Stephen Hunt
MESSAGES of support have flocked in to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) from across the world following the tragic death of Firefighter Stephen Hunt. The Service has been overwhelmed and very humbled by the support. To help make it easier for the public to express their thoughts and share their wishes, books of condolence have been set up and they will be given to Stephen's family. There is a book of condolence at the scene of the fire in Oldham Street where the GMFRS Community Event Vehicle has been set up to allow members of the public a quiet place to gather for reflection - and there have already been long queues to sign the book. There are also books of condolence at Philip's Park Fire Station where Stephen was based and in the reception area of Fire Service Headquarters in Bolton Road, Swinton. A digital book of condolence is also available on the GMFRS website, which can be accessed via the homepage or by clicking on the following link http://manchesterfire.gov.uk/updates/condolences.aspx On this page you will also find a button you can click on to donate to a fund which has been set up in Stephen's memory. All money raised will go to Stephen's dependants. Stephen was one of around 60 firefighters tackling a fire at Paul's Hair World on Saturday, July 13, when he got into difficulties inside the building at around 8.35pm. The 38-year-old father-of-two, who is based on Blue Watch, was rescued from the building by his colleagues and treated at the scene by the ambulance service before being taken to hospital. Sadly he was pronounced dead shortly after. His colleague, who was also rescued from the building, was treated at the scene for his injures and taken to hospital for treatment. He has left hospital and is now recovering with his family. County Fire Officer Steve McGuirk said: "The support we have received from the public of Greater Manchester and community groups, as well as other emergency services - not just from across the UK but from across the world - has been phenomenal. "We have books of condolence set up at various locations as well as on our website and we've already received thousands of messages, not to mention the wishes that have been given via Twitter and Facebook. "Every single message means so much to us as a Service and to Stephen's colleagues and friends, and we are truly grateful for the support. All condolence messages will be passed onto Stephen's family and friends. "We are still in a state of shock to be honest and it's a very difficult time for everyone in the Service - to lose a firefighter is an absolute tragedy and everyone is feeling a deep sense of loss." http://www.manchesterfire.gov.uk/updates...lence.aspx

Totally fitting tribute to a man who lost his life serving in the best traditions of the fire service.
The irony is had he lived he would now be threatened with the sack alongside his fellow workers:mad:

Evidence if it was ever needed about how arduous a task wearing BA can be and that we should always monitor how hard the troops are working at jobs.

Perhaps members of GMFRS should refuse to attend the ceremony if senior managers of this outfit are attending as well. I wouldn't normally suggest this course of action because, I think Stephen should be remembered for all the right reasons, the same ones most of us joined the job as well but I certainly couldn't go along if the CFO was there.
