Strathclyde Grey watch
#1
Here's the basics.......

Works on a Ten week cycle.....

Every 7 weeks the whole watch will get 18 day off.

2 days 2 nights 3 off

7 + 18 = 10 roughly (weeks that is)

That means you get 5 x 18 days leave / year

Your contracted to work 42 hours / week

The new system will mean that you only work 34 hours /week......

Therefore you will owe your employer 28 days to be paid back over the year.

Question. Guess what days you will be paying back?

Stay with me........................................

So if you work in a station that has 10 firefighters / watch..... 40 / station,

To make the 5th watch the watch will be now 5 x 8 / watch.

Answer. Weekends and nightshifts.

If you want a day off. Do a change of shift

The spare days can also be used as training days / nights as the new training centre will be run 24/7.

What is next and why..........................................

In the next year we are expecting 350 retirees of which 200 are drivers. Gullane does not have the capacity to train that many firefighters for Strathclyde.

We currently have crewing levels of 5,5,2.....watch this space...........

12 hour shifts and get this to encourage ethnic minority and women into the job!

No one has asked those in the job what they want......who cares!

The solution.................The Rep body has just been informed and can do nothing until they have the full facts and consult the membership.

The membership will be consulted.

Oh and Strathclyde have a strong and united Brigade committee working well for the benefit of its members.

Give GMC brigade committee they can give you chapter and verse on this shift we have been doing it for a couple of years or read the topics on here about it, prepare to abandon your social life and if you need a childminder let them know they are in for a big pay rise!

Who is actually united on the committee BS is that all the officials who vote for each other to go on courses and couldnt even hear a grievance or write a report on H&S. To the benefit to themselves no doubt. mmmm makes you think dont it. Well done SBC united at last you got rid of the only guy who actually tried to get you to do some union work.

How dare he.

Big Mistake...........

all the officials who vote for each other to go on courses and couldnt even hear a grievance or write a report on H&S.

I won't reply to the above.

Suffice to say its time to move on.

absolutely dreadful system, and what about when you finish nights at 9;00am then re-start days the following day at 9;00am, !

(& management say thats o.k. you have had 24 hours clear of duty, ! !)

What happens if you get turned out and don't get back to station till 11am, what do they say about the 24hours clear of duty then?
I know we have the same problem just now between days and nights, but you don't hear anyone complain about it, what if we kick off about less than 24hrs rest if they force this change through?

As usual, NOTHING, ! people did complain, but nothing was done, the new robust manager is incapable of change, beware, its coming to a station near you, !

Having said that, firefighters are an optimistic bunch, & some took solace in the thought of 5 leave periods per year, (even if two of those are cut short when you are called in for 2 days/nights.)
