It's the end of OS'es as we know it.
Virtualisation is now the industry norm. But, let's take it another step forward. Imagine running your app's without an underlying OS and in a container that can simply be booted in milliseconds and on any piece of hardware.
That's precisely what's happening now and the big players are google etc who have been doing this for a while with their clusters.
Now, with the advent of CoreOS & Docker etc, apps simply don't need all of the underlying OS to get going.
Putting it simply, you install your OS eg windows 7 etc and then put you programs eg adobe photoshop on top.
Imagine not needing windows 7 (or any other OS) to run it. Just photoshop by itself and it's dependencies.
Couple that with it running in it's own container and security and reliability are massively improved.
Lower footprints, increased security and performance to name a few.
Interesting times indeed for the IT world.
