How's this for an interesting looking job? - especially for retired FFs in London or the West Country with FS experience?
I would have definitely gone for this a few years back after retirement. Slightly more interesting than completing fire risk assessments in dodgy blocks of flats with pissy stairs which most FS jobs seem to involve
Thought I would share it here if anyone was interested or knows someone who might be

Hello everyone,
So basically I applied to a UK fire service, passed the application, talent screener, fitness test.

I received an email stating that if I were to miss any of the fact to face stages due to covid I would be able to complete them at a later date and it would not affect my current progress.

I was invited to the PAD however I got COVID so I was unable to attend.

They have now sort of gone back on their word and said that I can still do my pad but I will not be able to join the recruits course in May if I pass the pad, interview and medical due to time scales. Only that if I pass the above I MAY be considered for a future recruits course.

I am really disappointed by this and feel badly let down because I legally had to self isolate and there was nothing that I could do about this and they assured me that if I had to isolate my progress would not be affected. I just feel like it's really rubbish after all the effort I have put in over the last year or so to ensure that I am in a good enough shape to get in, mentally and physically.

Has anyone else had anything similar or got any advice? Any comments are really appreciated. Thank you

Recruitment for trainee full-time firefighters begins next week

Can you do it? Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service is now recruiting trainee, full-time firefighters and is asking people from every community across the county if they have got what it takes to join the county’s firefighters.

Recruitment for firefighter trainees opens next Monday, November 15, and closes on Sunday December 5. Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service particularly wants to attract people from diverse backgrounds and walks of life – women, and people from different races and communities – to apply and help ensure the county’s Fire Service truly represents the people it serves.

Firefighting is a rewarding career that involves so much more than fighting fires. As well as responding to incidents that range from road traffic collisions to search and rescue operations, firefighters work in the community with specialists and other partners to carry out prevention and protection work. Firefighters also play a vital role in community resilience in emergency situations such as the covid pandemic and flooding.

De-Villiers Nyahuma, a firefighter based in Kettering, said: “I love working for Northants Fire and Rescue Service. Joining is the best decision I ever made. I love the teamwork and have a passion for saving people’s lives. The Service welcomes anyone from any background. Here I am, doing the best I can, learning new things. If I can do it, you can do it.”

To be a trainee full-time firefighter, you:

must have a full car driving license valid for the UK (with a maximum 3 points allowed)

be able to permanently live and work in the UK without any restrictions

be aged 17 year and six months or over at the start of the application process.

Fire stations around the county will be holding Have A Go days where anyone who has an interest in becoming a firefighter can try out their skills, and chat to serving firefighters about what it’s like to do the role for real.

The recruitment website for applications opens on Monday 15 November, and the deadline for applications to be received is December 5. Applications from people from minority backgrounds are especially welcomed.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Chief Officer Paul Bullen said: “No two days are the same for our firefighters. The number of fires we attend is reducing, but we respond to a huge variety of incidents and challenge ourselves to do more work within the community to help promote safety and prevent incidents before they happen.

“We know that we still have some way to go to ensure our organisation truly reflects the make-up of Northamptonshire and we are working hard to make sure we represent those people we are working to protect.

“I would encourage anyone wondering if firefighting is a career for them, to come along and meet us. They will see that this is a unique role in a changing organisation where someone with a passion for community safety can really achieve something special.

“We know those people can be found in every community. If that’s you, why not apply?”
I got back yesterday and gave it a go and got 7.6 and the same today.

Hi,

I'm in the middle of a welcome dilemma . I've just received 2 offers of employment for the role of a wholetime firefighter (apprentice) in both Greater Manchester FRS and Hertfordshire FRS. I honestly didn't expect to get more than one offer and now I'm unprepared to pick between the two.

What service would you recommend I choose? Is there an objectively sound way to compare the two on things like career progression/job satisfaction/funding/reputation/performance/etc? The only ranking board I've been able to find was featured in this article but it wasn't helpful (not much detail, both FRSs were same rank). Can you shed some light on what you think of each service? Or how I should handle choosing?

Personal notes: I like both areas. I have family in Hertfordshire and family in Manchester. I have no mortgages or responsibilities that would tie me down to one location. I need an objective and non bias opinion, which is why I'm refraining from asking either of my prospective employers.
Thanks! I promise this isn't a brag post :p, I just don't personally know any firefighters irl.

Vacancy in the Fire Prevention Team - Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service

Complex Case Officer - Full Time Hours (37) – Monday – Friday

Grade I £26,004 - £29,630

Based at the Northern Accommodation Building and moving to alternative offices in Wellingborough in 2021.

Are you someone with experience of multi-agency safeguarding and Adult Risk Management processes? This is a brand new role in our team, which will help us to respond to concerns raised by our crews and Home Safety Team and to progress complex cases where improving fire safety of occupiers is intrinsically linked to multiple or complex needs and/or concerns about self-neglect, harm or abuse.

This vacancy sits within the Fire Prevention Team, which aims to keep people in our communities safe and well. Our challenge is to deliver timely and effective advice and interventions to ensure that vulnerable children, families and adults do not become victims of fire.

We receive referrals for home fire safety visits from a wide range of partners and also from individuals and family members. Our fire crews will also highlight concerns from incidents they attend. Some referrals progress easily but in other more complex cases, contacting occupiers or improving fire safety is more difficult to progress, for example, where there are issues such as hoarding and poor mental health, substance misuse or a neglected living environment. It is these cases that our new Complex Case Officer will manage and help to progress. Talking to occupiers about concerns and their needs, fact-finding, conducting follow up visits and working with partner agencies will therefore be daily business.

This will be regarded as a specialist post as you will advise colleagues internally and represent the service at multi-agency case meetings. It is therefore important that you already have a good working knowledge and experience of inter-agency guidance around early help for children and families, managing adults at risk and safeguarding.

Alongside managing cases, you will help to further develop our internal procedures and processes for recording and managing this work. To help with this you will attend some county safeguarding subgroups for children and families and adults, you will also have the opportunity to represent our service at some regional and national meetings with colleagues in other Fire and Rescue Services to ensure we work consistently.

Needless to say you will need to have a positive attitude and be self-motivated to successfully develop this new role, excellent interpersonal skills are also essential for you to build trust and rapport with colleagues, partners and those vulnerable occupiers we are trying to help.

Some existing knowledge and understanding of common causes of fires in the home and how they can be prevented would be desirable, but we will provide you with training and mentoring in this area.

Much of your case work will be related to concerns about neglect and self-neglect, you will therefore need to have personal resilience and will have access to support from line managers and also the service Wellbeing Support team.

As someone with experience of interagency safeguarding you will have an understanding of, and be committed to making safeguarding personal, as well as understanding when it is appropriate to share personal information.
Further details of the role can be found within the job description and person specification.

You must hold a full, current and valid driving license to enable you to drive service vehicles to meetings.

This is a full time role but there will be some flexibility on start and finish times.
