Crowd Funding for Barry Martin.
#31
Bill, I can see your point and I too thought £30k was a modest target .

We hear of other crowdfunding efforts raising magnificent sums for much less worthy causes.

But I wonder why the initial target was set at £30k.

This is no criticism whatsoever of the organisers - far from it,

but maybe there might be some reason why the target was initially set at an amount that appears modest.

The initial target was actually £25,000 not £30,000.
I pledged on here to donate a further £10 for every additional £10,000 raised.
I honestly thought at least £100,000 would be raised.
This young man only had three years service, so I doubt if what his wife will receive will be sufficient to sustain her and their twins. Surely this is a wake up call for ALL within the job to ensure this never happens again. But sadly it reflects poorly on a service were so few were prepared to donate the price of a coffee for one of us who sadly perished. Let’s not attempt to hold others to account, let’s be honest, because that’s the only way anything will be done about this. If we have to shame some people I really don’t care, so be it.
We all have opinions, thank god they are not all the same, or there would be no debate.

Bill the amount raised might impact upon any future compensation that might be payable if there was to be a successful claim for compensation

I had a mate who lost three fingers at a shout, and was pensioned out after 14 years service. It took the fire brigades union approx 5 years to get a pay out from the owners of the building. Also we don’t even know if Barry was a fire brigades union member. I am no lawyer so I won’t comment on what you posted. Maybe I am being naive, but I just find this shameful.
We need to take care of our own a whole lot better.

This world we live in has never been more connected than it is today.
I and many others put this on my FB page.
I went online to look for Barry’s crowdfunding, and my computer skills could only be described as basic. Sorry, no excuses, a ff was killed and he and his family have been let down. Not by the government, the fbu, the public, the employers, but by us.
The only way this can be resolved is to be honest, Barry has been let down by his fellow ffs, let’s hope something is done for the next person who faces his fate. If there’s a voluntary fund set up, let retired members join, I will be more than happy to sign up. This is a sad end to a sad event.
Bill I am only posting my views based on 30 years in the LFB, communication with regards to this sort of sad event has alway been crap in London. Perhaps to big a brigade for the “community spirit”
I know when my mate delboy died it was crap in London!

I was not taking a poke at you stressed.
Apologies if you thought I was.
I am simply frustrated at what has happened.
But things really need to change in my honest opinion.

100% I know you wasn’t having a dig at me. I might not have put it very well, I was just explaining the “shit” state of info in Londonderry

Take care

He was a FBU Member, ( according to FBU Website) so will the this fund raising affect any awards from the Accident & Injury Fund?

I cannot see why.
This money has been given on a voluntary basis by individuals, the accident and injury fund is an insurance based fund, based purely on risk. Whatever the standard payment is as per the policy won’t be affected by personal wealth, or an online fund set up for Barry. Sadly as far as I know due to his short service there will be no pension payout, there will however be a relatively small one of payment from the scheme. I would have thought if there is any litigation this would also be unaffected, based purely on the circumstances of the claim, but obviously this being a legal matter I am not 100% on this, but I would be surprised if the fund had any bearing on the final payment set. But litigation if pursued by the fire brigades union will take years to be resolved, and Barrie’s family will need immediate financial assistance. I hope this makes some in positions of influence take cognisance of this, and do something positive about it. We simply have to do a lot better than this.
